Civic Pride Rossendale are putting out an urgent appeal for more volunteers to help them achieve some major challenges this year.

They need extra help as they have entered the Royal Horticultural Society’s Britain in Bloom competition and hope to achieve the highest marks again.

This year they have entered many of the larger flower beds in Rawtenstall and Sparrow Park/Library gardens. One volunteer Ian Hoskins who works at the Trickett’s Memorial Ground in Waterfoot said: “I am the first to say I’m not a gardener but volunteering gives me the opportunity to work outdoors and support the gardeners.

“Working as part of a team means a lot to me and I appreciate the new friendships I have made, more than anything I am delighted with the improvements and the difference that we make to the community.”

The judging for this event will take place at the end of July and beginning of August.

They have also for the first time entered The National Open Garden Scheme which is a scheme mainly based on people open their own personal gardens to raise money for many health and Gardening Charities such as Maire Curie, Hospice UK and the Carers Trust.
Last year the organisation raised more than three million pounds.

It has been possible to enter the gardens around Rawtenstall thanks to Jeanette Newsham who agreed to open her private garden on Haslingden Road, and St Mary’s Church volunteers who will organise refreshments for the day.

The scheme invites garden lovers from across the country, especially people from the North West to come along and see the gardens that have been created and the improvement this makes to the urban environment.

The dates for the Civic Pride event is Saturday, July 26 and 27 from 1-5pm. Crawshawbooth’s Quaker meeting house will also be opening its gardens on the same weekend.

No gardening experience is needed to volunteer and all equipment is provided. There are lots of ways you can help such as litter picking, weeding, pruning, sweeping up, planting, making compost bins and watering plants.

Different groups meet on different days of the week in different places. You can pick whenever you are available to help.
