MONTGOMERY COUNTY, Ohio (WKEF) -- The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO) is working to enforce the national initiative, “Click It or Ticket,” to enforce the importance of wearing a seatbelt while traveling in a vehicle.

From May 19 to June 1, the Click It or Ticket campaign is set to take place across the county. According to the MCSO, additional deputies will be on the roads dedicated to seat belt enforcement.

The Sheriff’s Office said that deputies can be expected to strictly enforce and issue citations for failure to wear a seatbelt or properly restrain child passengers.

It was said that the appropriate device to secure children in a vehicle based on their age and weight is a necessity while a child is traveling in a car.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) reported that 50% of the 23,959 people killed in accidents in 2023 were not wearing a seatbelt.

Additionally, research displays that wearing a lap/shoulder seatbelt reduces the risk of a fatal injury to the front seat passengers by 45% and the risk of moderate to critical injury by 50%.

The NHTSA said that while seatbelt usage has experienced an increase of 91.2%, there are still millions of drivers who are not buckling up.
