Fergus Finlay: Dystopian literature has taught us that oppression has a limited shelf life

A cult has been created, called MAGA. In the most recent election Elon Musk (left) fuelled and fed the cult with hundreds of millions of dollars. Its leader — its Big Brother — is Donald Trump (right), and its protagonists are being taught to hate anyone who opposes him. File photo: AP/Evan Vucci
I find myself wondering these days how some of the great writers about dark futures would describe the world that is being created daily by the temporary alliance between the cruellest, meanest, man in the world and the world’s most amoral man, a man utterly devoid of scruples.
I don’t know if we ever needed to know the answer to that question, but if we did, we do now. Untold and heartless damage is part of the answer. But also, damage that will bite back. The combination of cruelty and amorality is like an acid. It eats into the fabric of everything.
